English Speaking Theatre Association

ESTA was formed in 1983 and approved later that year by the Civil Governor, to promote the art of theatre in all its various forms, in the English language, and performed by people of all ages and abilities. It was intended to entertain the British community, and other English-speaking nationalities that were living in, or visiting Tenerife.

In its early years the association performed in Las Cuevas church, and then in the Valle Luz Hotel in Puerto de la Cruz. In April 1987, the productions moved to the Auditorio in El Sauzal, where we performed until recently. Our many productions, normally three major productions each year, have included classics such as Noël Coward’s comedy “Blithe Spirit”, Joseph Kesselring's “Arsenic & Old Lace”, and J. B. Priestley’s “An Inspector Calls”. In addition, ESTA has performed one act plays, including both comedies and dramas. ESTA also produces variety shows, murder mystery dinners, and a series of popular traditional British pantomimes which are of particular interest, and have been well supported by local schools.

We recently celebrated our 40th anniversary, and are now based in the San Antonio Asociacón de Vecinos in Puerto de la Cruz where we are hoping to organise regular social events, including barbecues, play readings and evenings to meet our committee and members on an informal basis. Let us emphasise that ESTA is an English Speaking Association and that membership is open to all nationalities. Present members include residents from Spain, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Estonia, Bulgaria, Switzerland and Poland.

We welcome new members, both as actors and backstage assisting with costumes and scenery. Annual membership is only €15 and new memberships from now will remain valid until December 2024. Benefits of membership include discounts and priority booking at popular events such as our “Murder Mystery” dinners, which are often sold out very quickly.
